About Antoine Galland

Antoine Galland was a French orientalist and archaeologist who served as an antiquarian to the king. He was the first European translator of the Thousand and One Nights, which appeared in twelve volumes from 1704 to 1717. He added stories he heard from a Syrian storyteller, including Aladdin and Ali Baba, that are not in the earlier Arabic manuscripts. His version shaped how Europe came to know the tales.
