H. Rider Haggard

Sir Henry Rider Haggard was an English writer of adventure romances set in far-off places, mostly Africa. He is regarded as a pioneer of the lost world story. His eighteen Allan Quatermain tales begin with King Solomon's Mines, and they remain popular and influential. He also worked for land reform across the British Empire. In 1885 he published King Solomon's Mines, which sold widely and set the pattern for later tales of hidden worlds. He lived much of his life in Norfolk.
