About Jón Árnason

Jón Árnason was an Icelandic author, librarian and museum director. Inspired by the Brothers Grimm, he gathered legends and folktales from across Iceland with the help of many contributors. His collection Íslenzkar þjóðsögur og æfintýri, published in 1862 and 1864, preserved stories of elves, trolls and ghosts, among them the tale of Hildur, the Queen of the Elves. It remains the standard source for Icelandic folklore.
