Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud was born in Freiberg, Moravia, and lived most of his life in Vienna, where he trained as a doctor. He founded psychoanalysis, a method of treating mental distress by talking with the patient, and developed ideas such as free association and the unconscious. The Interpretation of Dreams appeared in 1899. On Dreams, a shorter summary of that book for general readers, followed in 1901. He left Vienna for London in 1938.
