Tapas Is Closing: The Best Tapas Alternatives for Writers

Anthony Pica October 28, 2026 7 min read

Tapas closes on March 31, 2027, and it stopped selling Ink on October 1, 2026. If you post a serial there, move now: back up every episode, tell your readers where you're going, and pick a new home that fits your genre and how you want to get paid. Royal Road, Wattpad, Substack, Patreon and Ream are the main options. Most writers end up using two.

What is happening to Tapas?

Kakao Entertainment, which bought Tapas in 2021, announced on October 1, 2026 that it is winding the platform down. Readers can no longer buy Ink, the coins used to unlock episodes. Ink they already have can be spent until March 31, 2027 at 11:59 pm Pacific. After that the site and app close, and unlocked episodes go with them. Kakao says there will be no refunds, and purchases do not move to Kakao Page or Kakao Webtoon.

For writers, the important parts are what the notice leaves out. It doesn't say how creator earnings will be paid out after Ink sales stopped. It doesn't offer an export tool for your episodes. It doesn't say what happens to comments and subscriber counts. Kakao has said it will help creators who want to move, including ending exclusivity contracts early. If you have a contract, ask Tapas in writing what happens to it, and keep the answer.

Tapas is the third pay-per-episode home to close in three years. Kindle Vella shut on February 26, 2025, and Radish closed at the end of 2025. Writers who moved from Vella to Radish to Tapas have now lost their platform three times. That history shapes the advice below: pick places for reach, but own the list of people who read you.

What should Tapas writers do before March 31, 2027?

Do these five things this month, in this order. None of them takes long, and every week you wait is a week fewer of readers seeing your notice.

1. Back up everything. Copy each episode's text into your own files, in order, with titles. Save your cover, banners and any art you own. Screenshot your stats page and your best reader comments. Those numbers help when you pitch a new platform, a publisher or a partner.

2. Post a moving notice. Add an author's note to your latest episode and pin it on your series page: where the story is going, the link, and the date you'll post there first. Repeat it in every episode until the shutdown. Readers miss one note. They don't miss five.

3. Collect emails. Set up a free newsletter (Substack, Ream or any email tool) and put the sign-up link in every note. An email address is the one thing no platform can take from you.

4. Check your contract. If you signed a Tapas contract, find it. Look for exclusivity, rights that pass to Tapas, and notice periods. Ask Tapas to confirm in writing that the rights are back with you.

5. Choose your new home and post there before you stop posting on Tapas. Give readers a few weeks where both places are live, so the move feels like following you, not losing you.

Fees as of October 2026 from each platform's help pages. Check before you sign up.

Royal Road

Royal Road is free and has the largest audience in English for fantasy, LitRPG and progression fiction. If your Tapas novel is a fantasy or system story, start here. Royal Road doesn't pay writers directly. Most earn by linking a Patreon where paying readers get chapters ahead of the free posts. A few writers make a living that way. Most make a little, so treat it as a reader engine first.

Wattpad

Wattpad is still the biggest free home for romance, young adult and teen fiction, and its readers are used to following a story episode by episode, much like Tapas readers. Wattpad's paid programs are invite-only, and the company has changed them several times. Use it for reach, and send readers to something you own for income.

Substack

Substack is a newsletter tool that works well for serials. Each episode goes to your readers' inboxes, and you can make later episodes paid. Substack takes 10% of paid subscriptions, and Stripe's card fees come on top. The big advantage is that you can download your subscriber list at any time. If Substack closed tomorrow, you'd still have every email.

Patreon

Patreon suits writers who already have readers who want to support them. Members pay monthly for early chapters, extras or a say in the story. Creators who published their page after August 4, 2025 pay a 10% platform fee, plus payment processing. Patreon brings you almost no new readers on its own, so pair it with Royal Road, Wattpad or a newsletter.

Ream

Ream was built for serial fiction, with tiers, early access and a reading app made for chapters. It works like Patreon for fiction writers, and readers can find stories inside it. When it launched, Ream kept about 10% plus card fees. Check its current pricing page.

Your own website

A simple site with your episodes and an email sign-up is slow to grow, but nobody can shut it down. If you already have readers on social media, your own site plus a newsletter is the safest long-term home. Many writers use it as the hub that every other platform links back to.

Which Tapas alternative fits your story?

Match the platform to your genre and to what you want most right now.

Fantasy, LitRPG or sci-fi: Royal Road for readers, Patreon for income.

Romance, YA or drama: Wattpad for readers, Substack or Ream for income.

Horror, mystery and literary serials: Substack, because these readers like a weekly email and genre sites are smaller.

You already have a big following: Patreon or Ream for income, and your own site as the hub.

You want your readers to hear the story: keep posting the text wherever you like, and turn the episodes into an audio series.

Why owning your reader list matters more than the platform

Vella, Radish and Tapas all had the same model: free first episodes, then readers paid per episode with coins. Writers did well on all three. Then each closed, and the readers stayed with the platform, not the writer. Writers who had an email list carried their readers to the next place. Writers who didn't started again from zero.

So whatever you choose, make every episode end with one line and a link: get the next episode by email. A list of 500 people who asked to hear from you is worth more than 50,000 reads on a site you don't control.

Turn your Tapas serial into an audio series

Tapas readers already pay per episode. That habit carries over to audio. At Academy Voices, real narrators audition for your story, and you choose the voice. Each episode goes into our store on your series' own page. Anyone can play Episode 1 free with no account. After that, it's $0.99 an episode, or a Season Pass from $4.99 to $9.99 depending on length.

On royalty share, you get 40% of every sale, your narrator gets 40%, and we keep 20%, so there's no narrator fee up front. The text stays yours to post on Royal Road, Wattpad, Substack or anywhere else. The audio becomes one more thing to share with your readers, and one more reason to come back each week. You can see how a series page works on our Maltese Falcon series, and every series we're making is on our Story Series page.

We're choosing our founding writers now. Founding writers pay no series fee (normally $150, which covers up to 30 hours of episodes), and we promote their series. Applications are open until November 30, 2026. Apply for a founding spot, or read how Academy Voices works first.

Questions about leaving Tapas

When does Tapas shut down?

Tapas closes on March 31, 2027 at 11:59 pm Pacific. Ink sales stopped on October 1, 2026. Readers can spend Ink they already have until the shutdown.

Will Tapas let me export my stories?

Tapas has not announced an export tool. Copy your episodes, covers and stats into your own files now, and don't wait for one.

Can I repost my Tapas novel on Royal Road or Wattpad?

If you own the rights, yes. If you signed an exclusive Tapas contract, ask Tapas in writing to release it first. Kakao has said it will help creators who want to move, including ending exclusivity contracts.

What is the best Tapas alternative for novels?

For fantasy and LitRPG, Royal Road. For romance and YA, Wattpad. For income you control, Substack, Patreon or Ream. Most writers use one free platform for readers and one paid one for income.

Can my serial be an audiobook or audio series?

Yes. A real narrator reads each episode, and listeners pay per episode or buy a Season Pass, with Episode 1 free. You keep your text and can post it anywhere. Founding writers pay no series fee if they apply by November 30, 2026.

Dates and fees are from the Tapas shutdown FAQ, Kakao's announcement, Amazon's Kindle Vella notice and each platform's help pages as of October 2026. We'll update this post if they change.
