A Christmas Tree and a Wedding

At a glittering New Year's children's party in St. Petersburg, an unnamed observer watches power and money at play. When the influential Yulian Mastakovitch learns that a delicate eleven-year-old girl is an heiress, his flattery turns to calculation, and a poor governess's son becomes the target of his petty cruelty. Five years later, the narrator passes a church and witnesses the inevitable result: the same girl, now sixteen and pale with tears, is being married to the man who once counted her fortune like interest on a ledger. With biting irony and moral clarity, Dostoevsky exposes a world where affection is investment and childhood becomes collateral—a compact, devastating portrait of social ambition and hypocrisy behind holiday glitter. Performed by Richard Michael Stibbard, this classic short story comes alive in a nuanced, period-true narration that captures both the festive sparkle and the chill beneath. A perfect single-sitting listen for fans of Russian classics, sharp social satire, and literary short fiction.
