The book grew out of a prize essay. Burpee's Farm Annual for 1887 offered cash prizes for the best essays on the subject, and E. D. Darlington's won first prize. It was then expanded into this handbook with L. M. Moll, published by W. Atlee Burpee and Company in 1888. Michele Wagner reads it in just under four hours.
