Major Jack Downing is a country Yankee who knows his farm and not much else, and he has come to the big town of Portland for the first time. In his own words he reports what he sees: the crowds, the sights, the advice of a newspaper editor, and the city sharpers who work Huckler's Row. The Downing letters were the work of Seba Smith, who created the character for his Portland newspaper in 1830 and made him a favorite across the country. Eric Leeb reads this one, a comic piece of early American humor, in about eight minutes. For anyone who likes a country fellow outwitting, or being outwitted by, the city.
