Frederick Douglass was born a slave in Maryland. He did not know his birthday and was separated early from his mother. He tells how he learned to read against his master's wishes, what he saw and suffered as a slave, and how, in 1838, he made his escape. His Narrative came out in 1845 and made him famous. It is plain, strong and often painful, and it remains one of the most important American autobiographies. Read by Selathiel Reagan, about three hours.
