The Signal

A single torn rail. A packed passenger train. And a wounded veteran who turns his own blood into a warning. In this searing tale of moral courage and social injustice, Semyon Ivanov—an ailing former soldier eking out a life as a railroad track-walker—discovers that his embittered neighbor, Vasily, has sabotaged the line after a humiliating blow from a corrupt official. With no tools or flag and seconds to spare, Semyon slashes his arm and waves a blood-soaked scarf to stop the oncoming locomotive. As the world narrows to a scarlet banner in the wind, a final, devastating choice confronts both men. Andrew Ryan’s resonant narration brings Garshin’s Russian realism to life with urgency and compassion, capturing the story’s relentless momentum and luminous humanity. The Signal is a taut, unforgettable portrait of working-class struggle, rage, and redemption—perfect for listeners of Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Gorky, and for anyone drawn to character-driven drama that grips from first breath to last.
