Charles Dickens
The Victorian novelist of A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist and Great Expectations.
Who was Charles Dickens?
Charles Dickens was the most popular novelist of Victorian England, the author of A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist and Great Expectations.
His life
Dickens was born in Portsmouth in 1812. When he was twelve his father was sent to debtors' prison and Charles went to work in a boot-blacking factory, an experience that shaped everything he wrote. He became a court reporter and journalist, and The Pickwick Papers made him famous at twenty-four.
His books
His novels came out in monthly parts that readers waited for in crowds. He wrote about the poor, about children and about the cruelty of the law with humor and anger, and he invented characters still known by name: Scrooge, Oliver Twist, Fagin, Pip, Miss Havisham. He also gave hugely popular public readings of his work, so his books were made to be heard. He died at Gad's Hill in 1870.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
