Robert Louis Stevenson
The Scottish author of Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Who was Robert Louis Stevenson?
Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish writer of adventure and suspense, the author of Treasure Island, Kidnapped and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
His life
Stevenson was born in Edinburgh in 1850 into a family of lighthouse engineers. He was sickly all his life and travelled constantly in search of a healthier climate: France, California, the Swiss Alps, and finally the South Seas.
His books
Treasure Island (1883) began as a map he drew with his stepson. Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) came to him in a nightmare and sold tens of thousands of copies in months. He also wrote Kidnapped and A Child's Garden of Verses. He settled on Samoa, where the islanders called him Tusitala, 'teller of tales', and died there in 1894, aged 44.
Man is not truly one, but truly two.
