About

Who was F. Scott Fitzgerald?

F. Scott Fitzgerald was the American novelist of the Jazz Age, the author of The Great Gatsby and short stories of wealth, love and disappointment in the 1920s.

His life

Fitzgerald was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1896 and went to Princeton. His first novel, This Side of Paradise (1920), made him a celebrity at twenty-three, and he married Zelda Sayre the same year. Together they became symbols of the glamorous, reckless 1920s.

His work

The Great Gatsby (1925) is now one of the most widely read American novels, though it sold poorly in his lifetime. He paid the bills with short stories for magazines, many about young people who want more than they can have: Winter Dreams, Absolution, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. He died in Hollywood in 1940, aged 44, believing himself a failure.

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
