Henry David Thoreau
The American naturalist and author of Walden.
Who was Henry David Thoreau?
Henry David Thoreau was an American writer and naturalist who lived for two years in a cabin by Walden Pond and wrote about nature, simplicity and resisting unjust laws.
His life
Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts, in 1817 and studied at Harvard. He worked as a teacher, surveyor and in his family's pencil business, and was a friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson. In 1846 he spent a night in jail for refusing to pay a tax that supported slavery and the war with Mexico.
His writing
From 1845 to 1847 he lived in a cabin he built on Emerson's land at Walden Pond. Walden (1854) describes that life. His essay on civil disobedience later inspired Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. His last essay, Walking, published just after his death in 1862, calls for wildness and long walks. He died in Concord at 44.
In Wildness is the preservation of the World.
