About

Who was Nathaniel Hawthorne?

Nathaniel Hawthorne was a New England novelist who wrote about guilt, sin and secrets in the shadow of the Puritans, most famously in The Scarlet Letter.

His life

Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on July 4, 1804. One of his ancestors was a judge at the Salem witch trials, a family shame that haunted him, and he added a 'w' to his name to set himself apart. He worked at the Salem custom house and as an American consul in England.

His books

The Scarlet Letter (1850), about Hester Prynne and the red 'A' she must wear, made him famous. He also wrote dark short tales like Young Goodman Brown and Rappaccini's Daughter, and retold the Greek myths for children in A Wonder-Book and Tanglewood Tales: King Midas's golden touch, the Minotaur, the Gorgon's head. He died in Plymouth, New Hampshire, in 1864.

No man, for any considerable period, can wear one face to himself and another to the multitude, without finally getting bewildered as to which may be the true.
