Robert W. Chambers
The author of The King in Yellow.
Who was Robert W. Chambers?
Robert W. Chambers wrote The King in Yellow (1895), a book of strange, linked stories about a play that drives its readers mad, and one of the great influences on modern horror.
His life
Chambers was born in Brooklyn in 1865 and studied art in Paris, where he lived among students in the Latin Quarter. Back in New York he worked as an illustrator for magazines before turning to fiction.
The King in Yellow
The King in Yellow (1895) links its stories through an imaginary play of the same name, the Yellow Sign, and the lost city of Carcosa. It inspired H. P. Lovecraft and, much later, the TV series True Detective. After it Chambers gave up horror for popular romance novels and became very successful. He died in New York in 1933.
