About this audiobook

William Pry is bored on a slow afternoon. When he sees a crowd gathered by a billboard, he pushes into the front line, where he finds a young woman, Violet Seymour, doing exactly what he is doing. Both are rubbernecks of the first rank. They fall in love at the scene of an accident. O. Henry's comic story is a joke on the New York habit of stopping to stare, and it builds to an ending that proves how strong a habit can be. Joe Reeder reads it in twelve minutes. For fans of O. Henry's quick wit and a good last line. O. Henry wrote hundreds of short stories about New York, and this one first appeared in his 1908 collection The Voice of the City. "Rubberneck" was the slang of the day for anyone who stops to gawk at a fire, a fight or a fallen horse, and O. Henry treats William and Violet as champions of the sport, with all the dignity of a society romance. It is a love story told entirely through the crowd. It makes a good first listen if you are new to O. Henry, and a quick one to share: it runs about as long as a coffee break. If you enjoy it, try The Gift of the Magi and The Ransom of Red Chief next.
