About

Who was Edgar Rice Burroughs?

Edgar Rice Burroughs created Tarzan and John Carter of Mars, and wrote fast, thrilling adventure stories about lost worlds, dinosaurs and distant planets.

His life

Burroughs was born in Chicago in 1875. He tried soldiering, gold mining, ranching and selling pencil sharpeners before he began writing in his mid-thirties, reading pulp magazines and deciding he could do better.

His books

His first story, A Princess of Mars, ran in a magazine in 1912, and Tarzan of the Apes followed the same year. Both became long series and made him one of the best-selling writers of his time. The Land That Time Forgot (1918) and its sequels sent explorers to an island of dinosaurs. He founded his own company to manage Tarzan, and the town of Tarzana, California, is named after his ranch. He died in Encino in 1950.
