About

Who was H. G. Wells?

H. G. Wells was an English writer who invented much of modern science fiction: The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, The Island of Doctor Moreau and The War of the Worlds all came from him in just four years.

His life

Wells was born in 1866 in Bromley to a shopkeeper's family and left school to work as a draper's apprentice, which he hated. A scholarship took him to London to study science under T. H. Huxley, the great defender of Darwin.

His books

Between 1895 and 1898 he wrote The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man and The War of the Worlds, using science to ask hard questions about class, power and what it means to be human. He went on to write dozens of novels, histories and books about the future, and he died in London in 1946, having lived to see some of his predictions come true.

No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's.
