Philip K. Dick
The science-fiction writer behind Blade Runner and Total Recall.
Who was Philip K. Dick?
Philip K. Dick was an American science fiction writer who asked what is real and what is human. His stories became Blade Runner, Total Recall and Minority Report.
His life
Dick was born in Chicago in 1928 and grew up mostly in California, in Berkeley. He sold his first story in 1951 and spent most of his life poor, writing at great speed for science fiction magazines and paperback publishers.
His work
He wrote more than forty novels and about 120 short stories. The Man in the High Castle won the Hugo Award in 1963, and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? became the film Blade Runner, released just after his death in 1982. His early short stories, like Second Variety and The Eyes Have It, are some of the best places to start: sharp, strange and often funny.
