Dracula Audiobook: Every Version Compared
The best Dracula audiobook for most listeners is the 2012 full-cast edition with Tim Curry and Alan Cumming, because Stoker wrote the novel as letters and diaries and a cast gives every writer a voice. Want one steady voice instead? Choose Simon Vance or Mark Gatiss. Want it free? LibriVox has volunteer readings.
There are more than a dozen English audiobooks of Dracula, and they differ more than you'd expect: some run under two hours, some run past eighteen, and some are not the full novel at all. This guide compares every major edition, who each one suits, and where our own three-narrator edition fits.

Which Dracula audiobook should you listen to?
Start with how you like to listen. Dracula is not told by one narrator. Stoker built it from Jonathan Harker's journal, Mina's letters, Dr. Seward's phonograph diary, telegrams and newspaper clippings. That choice is the whole question with audiobooks: do you want a different voice for each writer, or one voice holding it all together?
Pick a full cast if you lose track of who is speaking, or if you want it to feel like a radio play. Pick a single narrator if you want a calmer, closer listen, the way you'd read it alone. Pick a short adaptation only if you know you won't finish 15 hours, and know that you are getting a retelling.
If you listen in the car or while you work, a full cast is easier to follow, because each new voice tells you a new section has started. If you listen in bed with headphones, a single narrator is easier to drift along with.
New to the story? Don't worry about spoilers or the films. The novel is slower and stranger than any movie version, and the first four chapters, Jonathan alone in the castle, are some of the most frightening pages in English. Give any edition those first chapters before you decide whether it's the right voice for you.
The voices you'll hear in Dracula
Knowing who is writing each section makes any edition easier to follow. These are the main storytellers, in the order you meet them.
Jonathan Harker opens the book. He is a young English solicitor travelling to Transylvania to help a Count buy a house in London, and his journal turns from travel notes to panic as he realizes he is a prisoner.
Mina Murray, later Mina Harker, is Jonathan's fiancée. Her letters and journal hold the story together, and she is the one who gathers everyone's papers in order, which is why the book exists at all.
Lucy Westenra is Mina's best friend, whose letters about her three marriage proposals turn dark when she starts sleepwalking in Whitby.
Dr. John Seward runs an asylum and keeps his diary on a phonograph. Through him you meet Renfield, the patient who eats flies and waits for his master.
Professor Abraham Van Helsing arrives from Amsterdam and speaks in a thick, tangled English. He is the part most narrators have the most fun with, and the one that most separates good editions from great ones.
Count Dracula himself never gets a chapter. You only hear him through other people's writing, which is a big part of why he is so frightening. Listen for how each narrator handles his few lines: some go big, some go quiet, and the quiet ones are usually scarier.
The full-cast editions
Audible full cast (2012): Tim Curry and Alan Cumming
This is the edition most people mean when they say "the Dracula audiobook." It has more than 38,000 ratings on Audible, far more than any other version. Tim Curry plays Van Helsing, Alan Cumming plays Dr. Seward, Simon Vance plays Jonathan Harker, Katherine Kellgren plays Mina and Susan Duerden plays Lucy. Each actor reads their own character's diary or letters, so the book plays out the way Stoker laid it out.
A review on This Is Horror praised Curry and Cumming and the clean sound, but found Lucy's accent over-played and noticed something odd: when Mina retells a scene, she imitates the other actors' voices. Neither stops it from being the safest first choice.
Audible full cast (2021)
A newer cast, including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Theo James, Himesh Patel and Jason Watkins, with about 1,800 ratings. At almost three hours longer than the 2012 version, it takes the story slower. Choose it if you've already heard the 2012 cast and want a fresh take.
Naxos (2015)
Naxos specializes in classics and casts British stage actors. David Horovitch, Jamie Parker, Joseph Kloska and Alison Pettitt lead a cast that plays it straight: less star power, steady and clear.
Our edition: three narrators
Our Dracula sits between a full cast and a single voice. Three narrators, Eric Priessman, Julie Ann Marra and Jane Wing, perform the complete, unabridged novel in about 17 hours. That gives the letters and diaries different voices without the crowd of a big cast production. Press play on the sample below to hear it.
Like every Academy Voices title, it is Certified Human Voice: performed by real people, in their own voices, with their consent. You can hear it on our Dracula catalog page, where the sample plays in full.
The single-narrator editions
Simon Vance (Blackstone, 1998)
Simon Vance has recorded hundreds of audiobooks, and this early reading is still one of the most praised. It won an AudioFile Earphones Award, according to Blackstone's listing. He keeps the narration restrained and saves the strong accents for Van Helsing and the Count, which makes the horror land harder. At about 14.5 hours it is also one of the shorter complete readings.
Mark Gatiss (Penguin Classics, 2020)
Gatiss co-created the BBC's 2020 Dracula series, and it shows: he knows this book. His reading is warm and theatrical, and at 17.5 hours unhurried. A good pick if you like a narrator who clearly loves the material.
Greg Wise and Saskia Reeves (2017)
Two narrators, one male and one female, share the book. It is a good middle ground if a full cast feels busy but one voice for every character feels flat. At just over 18 hours it is one of the longest complete readings, so expect a measured pace.
Gildart Jackson and Nick Sandys
Two solid single-voice readings. Jackson's (2015) is the more classic British reading at about 17.5 hours. Sandys (2018) is brisker at just under 16 hours. Both are good library picks if the better-known editions are checked out.
Shorter versions: adaptations and abridgements
Not every Dracula audiobook is the novel. The 2026 Bram Stoker's Dracula with Jonathan Bailey, Ella Purnell and Maggie Gyllenhaal is an adaptation by Robyn Ahern, about 6 hours long, built as drama. The BBC Radio 4 reading with Michael Fassbender runs just over 2 hours. Both are good for a Halloween evening. Neither is the complete book, so check the length before you buy. Anything under about 14 hours is not the full novel.
Free Dracula audiobooks
Dracula was published in 1897 and is in the public domain in the United States, so the text is free on Project Gutenberg, and volunteers have recorded it for LibriVox. The recordings are free and complete, but quality varies from chapter to chapter, because different volunteers read different parts. Your library is the other free route: most of the editions above are on Libby or hoopla.
Why Dracula works so well as an audiobook
Most novels have one storyteller. Dracula has a dozen, and every one of them is writing in the moment, without knowing what happens next. Dr. Seward even records his diary on a phonograph, so part of the book was literally meant to be heard. On audio, you get each writer's fear as they feel it.
The entries are also dated, running from early May to November. Some listeners follow along day by day, hearing each entry on the date it was written. If you start in May, you finish just after Halloween.
Questions listeners ask about Dracula audiobooks
How long is the Dracula audiobook?
A complete, unabridged reading runs about 14.5 to 18.5 hours depending on the narrator. Anything much shorter is abridged or adapted.
Who narrates the most popular Dracula audiobook?
The 2012 Audible full cast, led by Tim Curry as Van Helsing and Alan Cumming as Dr. Seward, with Simon Vance, Katherine Kellgren and Susan Duerden.
Is there a free Dracula audiobook?
Yes. LibriVox has free volunteer recordings of the full novel, and many libraries lend professional editions through Libby and hoopla at no cost.
Is a full cast better than a single narrator for Dracula?
It depends on how you listen. A full cast makes it easy to tell who is writing each section. A single narrator gives a closer, calmer listen. Many people start with a full cast and come back later to a single voice.
Is the Jonathan Bailey Dracula the full book?
No. It is a 2026 adaptation of about 6 hours. For the whole novel, choose an unabridged edition of 14 hours or more.
