Kindle Unlimited Is Now Kindle+: What Authors Need to Know
Kindle Unlimited is now Kindle+, and subscribers can listen to audiobooks as well as read. Only two kinds of audiobook get in: Amazon's own virtual voice editions, added automatically, and ACX audiobooks that are exclusive to Audible and paid per finished hour. ACX royalty share titles are not included yet.
Amazon announced the change on October 22, 2026. Since then authors have asked us two questions: does this change where I should make my audiobook, and what happens to my narrator? This post answers both, with Amazon's own rules, a worked example of what a listen pays, and an honest look at when ACX fits and when we do.
What is Kindle+?
Kindle+ is the new name for Kindle Unlimited. Amazon emailed subscribers on October 22, 2026. The US price stays at $11.99 a month, members still keep up to 20 titles at a time, and nothing they saved is lost.
The real change is audio. Kindle Unlimited already had some audiobooks, but they were a small side shelf. Kindle+ adds audiobooks made through Kindle Direct Publishing and ACX, and Amazon says it will put extra money into the fund that pays authors for listening. In Amazon's announcement to authors, the goal is stated plainly: attract new subscribers with the audio format.
For now, audiobooks in Kindle+ only play for listeners in the US. Amazon says more countries will follow but has not named any or given dates. Authors in any country can enroll, but the listening happens in the US.
Which audiobooks get into Kindle+?
There are two doors in, and they work very differently.
Virtual voice audiobooks go in automatically. Virtual voice is Amazon's computer-generated narration, offered free inside KDP. If your ebook is enrolled in KDP Select and you made a virtual voice edition, that audiobook is now in Kindle+ and in the Audible Plus catalog. You don't have to do anything. Amazon's announcement gives no separate switch to keep the audio out while the ebook stays in KDP Select.
ACX audiobooks go in only if you opt in, and only if they qualify. You enroll them from your KDP Bookshelf. To qualify, all of these must be true:
- The matching ebook is in KDP Select.
- The audiobook has exclusive distribution with Audible.
- Whispersync for Voice (Read & Listen) is turned on.
- The narrator was paid per finished hour (ACX calls this Pay for Production).
That last rule is the one most authors miss. In Amazon's own words, it is "exploring" adding royalty share and Royalty Share Plus titles. Today they are out.
| Audiobook | In Kindle+? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual voice edition, ebook in KDP Select | Yes | Automatic |
| ACX, exclusive, paid per finished hour, Whispersync on | Yes, if you enroll | Opt in from KDP Bookshelf |
| ACX royalty share or Royalty Share Plus | No, not yet | Amazon says it is exploring this |
| ACX non-exclusive | No | Must be exclusive to Audible |
| Any audiobook sold wide (Spotify, libraries, Kobo) | No | Must be exclusive to Audible |
| No audiobook at all | No | Ebook only |

The Author Audiobook Checklist
What it costs, how to choose a narrator, the three ways to pay, and what happens after you publish.
How do authors get paid when someone listens?
Not per sale. Kindle+ listening is counted in Kindle Edition Normalized Pages, the same page count used for ebook reads, and paid from the same monthly KDP Select Global Fund. Amazon's Kindle+ royalty help page sets out the rules:
- You are paid the first time a subscriber reads or listens to a page. If they read it and later listen to it, that page pays once.
- If they read and listen at the same time and the two formats pay different rates, you get the higher rate.
- The per-page rate changes every month. It is the fund divided by all pages read that month.
- Kindle+ listening shows up in your KDP reports. Audible sales of ACX books still show only in your ACX account.
Here is what that means in money. The page rate has been around half a cent in recent years. Take a 300-page novel:
| What the subscriber does | Pages paid | At half a cent a page |
|---|---|---|
| Listens to the whole audiobook | 300 | About $1.50 |
| Reads the ebook, then listens to all of it | 300 | About $1.50 |
| Reads half, listens to the other half | 300 | About $1.50 |
| Listens to the first 3 chapters, stops | About 40 | About $0.20 |
Half a cent is a rounded example, not a quote. Check the current rate in your KDP reports.
The second row matters most. A loyal reader who already read your ebook in Kindle+ earns you nothing more by listening. And whoever narrated your book is not part of this payment at all. If you paid them per hour, they were paid in full already. That is fair, and it is also why royalty share books are left out: there is no clean way, yet, to split a page payment with a narrator.
What Kindle+ means for narrators
We are narrators, so we will say this straight. For a narrator, Kindle+ adds nothing. A narrator paid per hour got their fee when the book was finished. A narrator on royalty share is not in the program. And every virtual voice edition now sits on the same Kindle+ shelf as books read by people, at no extra cost to the subscriber.
A listener scrolling Kindle+ can't always tell which is which. That makes it more important, not less, to say clearly when a real person reads your book. Every audiobook we publish carries our Certified Human Voice mark. If you want to check any audiobook you're about to buy, our guide on how to tell if an audiobook is narrated by a real person shows what to look for.
Does Kindle+ change the choice between ACX and Academy Voices?
It changes it for one kind of author, and not for the rest. Here is the honest version.
If you pay your narrator up front and stay exclusive to Audible, ACX now has one more door open. Your audiobook can sit in Kindle+ and earn page reads on top of Audible sales. If most of your readers already live inside Kindle Unlimited, that is a real reason to choose ACX for that book.
If you want royalty share, Kindle+ changes nothing today. On ACX, royalty share already meant 7 years exclusive to Audible, as ACX's distribution page explains. Now it also means your book is shut out of Kindle+ until Amazon decides otherwise. You give up every other store and still don't get the new shelf. We covered the full ACX trade-off in royalty share without Audible exclusivity.
If you want your book everywhere, Kindle+ is not for you, and that's fine. A book distributed wide can't be in Kindle+, because Kindle+ requires Audible exclusivity. In our own catalog, only about one dollar in three comes from Audible. Libraries, Spotify, Apple, Kobo and the rest bring in the other two. Our post on where to sell your audiobook besides Audible has the detail.
| Question | ACX, paid per hour, exclusive | ACX royalty share | Academy Voices |
|---|---|---|---|
| In Kindle+? | Yes, if you opt in | No, not yet | No |
| On Audible and Amazon? | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Libraries, Spotify, Kobo, Google Play? | No | No | Yes |
| Locked in for how long? | Exclusive while enrolled | 7 years | No exclusivity |
| Up-front narrator cost | Full fee | None | Your choice: none, partial or per hour |
| Who runs the production? | You | You | We do |
| Real narrator guaranteed? | Your choice | Your choice | Yes, every book |
ACX and Kindle+ terms from Amazon's help pages; Academy Voices terms from our Facts page. October 2026.
With us, you post your book free and real narrators audition. When your narrator signs, a one-time $350 production fee is due. Then you choose how the narrator is paid: royalty share (40% to you, 40% to the narrator, 20% to us, for 10 years), Royalty Share Plus with a payment you set, or per finished hour from $50. You can pay the narrator over time with Klarna or Affirm, if approved. We check every chapter, master the files, and publish to nearly 50 stores, libraries and streaming services, plus our own store. Our Facts page lists every term.
One practical note on royalty share. On a long book it draws far fewer auditions, here and everywhere, because the narrator is betting many hours on future sales. For books over about five hours, a per-hour rate brings in more experienced narrators. Our post on royalty share vs per finished hour helps you choose.
What to do now
- List your books and their audio. For each one, note: is the ebook in KDP Select, is there a virtual voice edition, is there an ACX audiobook, and is it exclusive or wide.
- Check your virtual voice editions. If one exists and your ebook is in KDP Select, it is already in Kindle+. If you planned a narrated version, decide which one you want listeners to find first.
- Test before you move a bestseller. If you have an eligible ACX title, try Kindle+ with a slower backlist book first. Compare a few months of listened pages against your Audible sales before enrolling a strong seller.
- Don't miss the ACX deadline. Separately from Kindle+, older ACX titles must move to ACX's new payment model by December 31, 2026, or they stop being distributed on Audible. Our guide to the ACX royalty changes walks through it.
- For a new audiobook, pick the goal first. Kindle+ readers and Audible only: ACX per hour. Every store, library and app, with someone else running production: us.
Questions authors ask about Kindle+ and audiobooks
Is Kindle Unlimited gone?
Only the name. Kindle+ is the same subscription with the same US price, $11.99 a month, the same 20-title limit, and audiobooks added for US listeners.
Are royalty share audiobooks in Kindle+?
No. Amazon says only ACX titles paid per finished hour are eligible today, and that it is exploring how to add royalty share and Royalty Share Plus titles. There is no date.
Can I keep my virtual voice audiobook out of Kindle+?
Amazon's announcement offers no separate audio switch. A virtual voice edition is included whenever its ebook is in KDP Select. To take it out, you would remove the ebook from KDP Select at the end of its term, or unpublish the virtual voice edition.
Can my ebook stay in KDP Select if my audiobook is with Academy Voices?
Yes. KDP Select asks for exclusivity on the ebook. Enrolling an audiobook is a separate, opt-in step for ACX titles. A narrated audiobook we publish wide simply isn't in Kindle+, and your ebook stays in KDP Select as before.
Will Kindle+ audiobooks come to the UK or Canada?
Amazon says more marketplaces are coming but hasn't named them or given dates. Today, listening in Kindle+ is US only.
Do narrators earn anything from Kindle+?
Not directly. Kindle+ pays the rights holder by the page. Narrators paid per hour already got their fee, and royalty share titles aren't in the program.
