The Cop and the Anthem

On a frost-bitten New York evening, Soapy, an unhoused wanderer with a wry sense of dignity, hatches a simple winter plan: get arrested and enjoy three warm months on Blackwell’s Island. But each petty scheme—dining and dashing, window-smashing, heckling, causing a scene, even “borrowing” an umbrella—backfires in hilariously unexpected ways. As the night deepens and his luck runs thin, the strains of a church anthem awaken a forgotten hunger for hope and respectability—only for fate to deliver O. Henry’s unforgettable twist. Jason Michael Mann’s nuanced narration captures the humor, heart, and humaneness of this timeless classic, bringing Soapy’s bite, bravado, and vulnerability vividly to life. A poignant urban fable of poverty, pride, and second chances, The Cop and the Anthem pairs laugh-out-loud misadventure with a sting of truth that lingers long after the final line. Perfect for a single sitting, commute, or classroom listening, this performance is a sparkling introduction to O. Henry’s wit and a resonant reminder that redemption can arrive in the unlikeliest moment—just as fortune turns on its heel.
