The Dummy That Lived

What happens when a window mannequin wakes up with the mind of a newborn and the wardrobe of a Parisian “rare bargain”? In this wry, whirlwind short story by L. Frank Baum, a mischievous Yellow Ryl breathes life into a department-store dummy, who marches into the city armed with a hat, gloves, and a parasol—and absolutely no idea how the human world works. From ordering coffee that trickles through her wooden ribs to baffling a streetcar conductor and scandalizing a police inspector, her earnest attempts to “do as others do” ripple into pure comic bedlam. Salathiel Reagan’s lively narration captures Baum’s playful satire and bustling city soundscape, giving voice to the prim, implacable dummy, the blustering Inspector Mugg, and the puckish fairy whose passing breath can start—or stop—a life. A bite-size classic brimming with wit, imagination, and a sly poke at consumer culture, The Dummy That Lived is a perfect quick listen for fans of whimsical fantasy, vintage humor, and timeless tales with a twist.
