About

Who was L. Frank Baum?

L. Frank Baum created the Land of Oz. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) and its thirteen sequels made him America's best-loved writer for children.

His life

Baum was born in Chittenango, New York, in 1856. Before Oz he raised chickens, ran a theater company, a store and a newspaper in South Dakota, and sold china. He started writing for children in his forties.

Oz

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz came out in 1900 with pictures by W. W. Denslow and was a bestseller at once. Readers begged for more, and Baum wrote thirteen more Oz books, along with Santa Claus stories and many others. He moved to Hollywood, made early films, and died there in 1919, twenty years before the famous movie.
