ACX vs Academy Voices: An Honest Comparison (2026)

Anthony Pica November 3, 2026 7 min read

ACX is free and puts your audiobook on Audible, Amazon and Apple Books. Academy Voices costs a one-time $350, finds your narrator for you, checks and masters every file, and sends the book to nearly 50 stores, libraries and streaming services. If you only want Audible and can manage a narrator yourself, ACX works. If you want a book everywhere without doing the work, use us.

An author emailed us last month with one line: "ACX vs Academy Voices?" This is the full answer. It covers what each one costs, who does the work, where your book ends up, what happens with royalty share, and when ACX is honestly the better choice.

What ACX is, and what Academy Voices is

ACX is Audible's marketplace for audiobook rights. You post your book, narrators audition, you pick one, and the finished audiobook goes on sale through Audible, Amazon and Apple Books. Posting is free. ACX pays you royalties monthly.

Academy Voices is an audiobook publisher run by narrators. You post your book free, real narrators audition, you pick one, and from there we run the production: contract, schedule, a 15-minute check before the full book is recorded, a quality check on every chapter, mastering and distribution. We have published 847 audiobooks since 2023 with 207 narrators. Every one is read by a real person in their own voice. We call that Certified Human Voice.

So the honest difference is this. ACX is a marketplace with a store attached. We are a publisher with a casting room attached. Both can get you a finished audiobook. The question is how much of the work you want to do and where you want the book to sell.

What it costs, how to choose a narrator, the three ways to pay, and what happens after you publish.

What does each one cost?

ACX costs nothing to post. If you pay your narrator per finished hour, you pay the narrator directly. If you choose royalty share, nobody pays anything up front and the narrator takes half of your royalties.

Academy Voices also costs nothing to post, and you hear auditions free. When you choose a narrator and they sign the contract, a one-time $350 production fee is due. Then you pick one of three ways to pay the narrator:

  • Royalty share. No narrator fee. Sales are split 40% to you, 40% to your narrator and 20% to us, for 10 years. After that the narrator's share comes to you.
  • Royalty Share Plus. The same split, plus one payment to your narrator for the whole book, from $50, which you set. You pay it after you approve the finished audiobook.
  • Per finished hour. You pay the narrator a rate you set, from $50 per finished hour, and there are no narrator royalties.

You do not have to pay a narrator all at once. You can use Klarna or Affirm at checkout, if approved, or split a narrator payment of $300 or more into 2 to 5 parts, each paid before that part is recorded. Our full breakdown of what an audiobook costs has worked examples by book length.

The question we hear most is "ACX royalty share is free, and you charge $350. Why?" The $350 pays for the work ACX leaves to you: casting help, checking every file against retailer rules, mastering, and publishing to the stores and libraries ACX does not reach. If you would rather do that work yourself, ACX is the cheaper route.

Who does the work?

On ACX, you are the producer's manager. You post the book and an audition script, listen to auditions, make an offer, approve the first 15 minutes, answer the narrator's questions, approve every chapter, and fix anything ACX's audio check rejects. Plenty of authors do this well. Many tell us it took far more time than they expected, and one author who wrote to us described running into scam artists there.

With us, you still choose your narrator and approve the first 15 minutes. You can change narrators at no cost until you approve that sample. After that, our team handles the schedule, checks each chapter for noise, levels and room tone, sends fixes back to the narrator, masters the files, and publishes. You hear the finished book and approve it. If a store rejects something, we fix it.

If you want to see how casting works before you post, our step-by-step guide to hiring a narrator walks through it, and you can browse our narrators and listen to their samples now.

Where will your audiobook sell?

This is the biggest difference, and it decides more money than the fees do.

ACX offers two distribution choices. Exclusive distribution sends your book to Audible, Amazon and Apple Books and pays the higher royalty. Under ACX's new model, which started on May 26, 2026, that is 50% for exclusive titles and 30% for non-exclusive ones, according to ACX's royalty page. Non-exclusive lets you sell elsewhere too, but ACX itself only distributes to the same three stores. Getting into libraries, Spotify, Kobo or Google Play is then your job, through another distributor.

We distribute every book wide: Audible and Amazon, plus Apple Books, Spotify, Google Play, Kobo, Libby, hoopla and more, nearly 50 in all. Your book is also in our own store, where listeners buy and keep the file with no subscription.

Why this matters: in our own catalog, only about one dollar in three comes from Audible. Libraries, Spotify, Apple and the other stores bring in the other two. We wrote about that in detail in where to sell your audiobook besides Audible. An Audible-only book misses most of where our listeners are.

Royalty share: ACX vs Academy Voices

Royalty share means the narrator is paid from sales instead of up front. Both ACX and Academy Voices offer it. The terms are very different.

On ACX, royalty share requires exclusive distribution, and the narrator is paid for 7 years. ACX's distribution page describes the exclusive term. In 2021 ACX said that ending a royalty-share deal early needs the narrator's agreement. In practice, if you choose royalty share on ACX, plan on the book being Audible-only for the full seven years.

With us, royalty share is wide from the first day. There is no exclusivity at all. The term is 10 years, and after that the narrator's share comes back to you. We wrote a whole post on royalty share without Audible exclusivity if you want the detail.

A practical note on auditions. Royalty-share books on any marketplace get fewer auditions as they get longer, because the narrator is betting hours of work on sales. That is true with us too. For a long book, Royalty Share Plus or a per-finished-hour rate brings in more experienced narrators. Our royalty share vs per finished hour post explains how to choose.

Real narrators, guaranteed

In May 2025 Audible began offering computer-generated narration to publishers, with more than 100 synthetic voices, as Publishers Weekly reported. That is Audible's choice to make. It does mean a listener on Audible can no longer assume a person read the book.

Every audiobook we publish is performed by a real person in their own voice, and we say so on every book. For authors whose readers care about that, and many do, it is a selling point you can put on your cover and in your ads.

When ACX is the better choice

We would rather you choose well than choose us. ACX is the better fit when:

  • Your readers are almost all on Audible and you are happy to stay exclusive.
  • You can pay a narrator per finished hour and you enjoy managing the production yourself.
  • You already have a narrator you trust who works on ACX.
  • Every dollar up front matters more to you than your time, and you are fine with Audible, Amazon and Apple only.

Academy Voices is the better fit when:

  • You want libraries, Spotify, Kobo and the rest, not only Audible.
  • You want royalty share without locking the book to one store for seven years.
  • You would rather someone else checks files, chases fixes and handles publishing.
  • You want a guarantee that a real person reads your book.

Already finished your audiobook somewhere else? You can bring it to us for a one-time $150 publishing fee and we distribute it wide.

Questions authors ask about ACX vs Academy Voices

Can I use ACX and Academy Voices for the same book?

Not for the same audiobook at the same time if it is exclusive on ACX, because exclusive means Audible, Amazon and Apple only. If your ACX title is non-exclusive, or once an exclusive term ends, you can bring the finished audiobook to us for wide distribution.

Do I keep the rights to my audiobook with Academy Voices?

Yes. You own the audiobook under every option, whether you pay the narrator per hour, share royalties, or use Royalty Share Plus.

Is my book still on Audible if I publish with Academy Voices?

Yes. We distribute to Audible and Amazon along with nearly 50 other stores, libraries and streaming services.

How long does an Academy Voices audiobook take?

Most books take a few weeks to a few months, depending on length and the narrator's schedule. You agree on dates in the contract, and you approve the first 15 minutes before the full book is recorded.

What if I don't like the narrator I picked?

You can switch to a different narrator at no cost until you approve the 15-minute sample. The $350 fee carries over to the new narrator.
